Lars Suneborn to head training at Smart Card Alliance

The Smart Card Alliance has announced that security industry veteran Lars Suneborn has joined the organisation as the director of training programs to lead and expand education, training and certification initiatives on smart card technology.

“We are excited to welcome Lars Suneborn to the Smart Card Alliance in this official capacity. For many years, he has been committed to the work of the Smart Card Alliance, volunteering his time to lead our Access Control Council and its many valuable projects. This dedication to the smart card industry and his extensive industry experience make Lars the ideal person to take charge of and expand our smart card technology training programmes and make training and certification available to a wider range of industry professionals,” says Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance.

Suneborn brings more than 30 years of smart card industry experience to the Alliance. In his new role, he will manage, plan, promote and deliver the Smart Card Alliance training and certification programmes – the Certified Smart Card Industry Professional (CSCIP) and the recently announced Certified System Engineer ICAM PACS Training and Certification Program (CSEIP). These programmes fall under the Alliance’s education and training organisation that develops the skills of smart card-related industry professionals who are interested in continuously improving their knowledge and professional proficiency in the industry.

CSCIP is the smart card industry’s first standardised certification programme that recognises professionals who possess advanced levels of smart card industry knowledge and experience. The programme started in 2008 and has experienced great success here in the US and internationally, certifying 175 professionals. The Smart Card Alliance recently expanded its training and certification programmes by adding CSEIP, which was created for integration engineers implementing ICAM standards-based E-PACS. The CSEIP programme provides advanced training on how to set up and test E-PACS to align with federal government-wide physical access control system specifications.

“I am very excited and deeply honoured to be entrusted with this opportunity to create and grow a Smart Card Alliance Training Centre. This is indeed an important function that will effectively serve the industry delivering and using smart card technology, as well as Federal agencies, in their efforts to achieve FICAM compliance,” says Suneborn.

Prior to this role, Suneborn spent 28 years with HIRSCH-Identiv, holding leadership roles including national training manager and director, where he gained extensive experience in developing and constructing customised, agency-specific training courses as well as train-the-trainer activities. He is also recognised as a physical access control system (PACS) and smart card subject matter expert with CSCIP-G and CSEIP certifications. Suneborn is actively involved in industry groups developing open standards for smart card and related system components.
