UK steps into mobile ID with digital driving licence

16/05/16

The United Kingdom’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has revealed that it is developing a mobile driving licence prototype.

DVLA Chief executive Oliver Morley has used Twitter to highlight an Apple version of the driving licence, embedded in Apple’s Wallet app.

Morley said the mobile driving licence (mDL) would be an "add-on" to the plastic card rather than a replacement and that there was no timeline for its introduction.

The benefits of mDLs include the capability to link record systems with changes rendered on the phone in real-time. Information such as change of address, over/under 21-years-old status, organ donor status and change in driving status, endorsements, or restrictions, can be updated to mDLs immediately.

In the US, Iowa Department of Transportation employees last year became first in the nation to pilot a mobile driver license created by MorphoTrust.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Victoria has become the second Australian state to consider offering citizens a drivers licence smartphone app.
