Gemalto helps Spanish store accept Samsung Pay

Digital identity solutions firm company Gemalto has announced a deal to enable the 11 million cardholders of Spain’s largest department store chain to pay for goods using the biometrics-backed service Samsung Pay.

The agreement converts El Corte Ingles into the first private label card provider in Spain to adopt Samsung’s mobile wallet, complementing its existing store payment card. Gemalto said its Trusted Service Hub (TSH) provides the entire digitalisation and tokenisation process, concealing true card credentials and making it difficult for hackers to access them.

El Corte Ingles cardholders can choose to replace the physical card’s credential with a new digital value known as a token, meaning that only the token’s data is stored on the phone. Customers can then conveniently pay for goods and services, authenticating transactions instantly and securely using biometrics.

The Samsung Pay m-payment service was launched in Spain for CaixaBank, imaginBank, Banco Sabadell and Abanca customers over a year ago and is now compatible with contactless technology available in 75 percent of payment terminals in the country. It was recently activatedfor Banco Santander customers.
