Belgian govt's Itsme ID app welcomes 100000 users

Over 100,000 Belgians have identified themselves with their smartphones since mid-January on government websites such as MyPension and Tax-on-Web,  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Agenda Alexander De Croo said this week.

Using the Itsme smartphone app, people can create a profile and identify themselves for online access to government applications. The government is counting on a rapid increase in the number of app users, reported TelecomPaper.

Itsme was developed by Belgian Mobile ID, a consortium of Belgian banks Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING and KBC, and mobile network operators Proximus, Orange and Telenet. Now optimised for the smartphone, the app was announced in 2016 and has been live since mid-2017. The government is now also going to support it alongside existing methods such as eID and the identity card with NFC chip.

Once the app (Android and iOS) has been installed, the identity of the user is checked and then linked to the app on the smartphone. This can be done in two ways: via one of the partner banks by means of the digipass and bank card, or online via the electronic identity card. The app must be secured with a pin code or fingerprint.
