Telegram launches passport and ID function

03/08/18

Telegram, a cloud-based instant messaging service, launched its new ‘Passport’ feature this week, a unified identification authorization method integrated directly into the platform.

Now, Telegram users can upload sensitive, identifying documents and instantly share the data with services that require real-world ID, including financial services and initial coin offerings (ICOs).

According to the announcement, all sensitive documents and personal data are stored in the Telegram cloud using end-to-end encryption. Telegram emphasizes that it will have no access to the data and that the user has full control over passwords and data sharing. Notably, Telegram plans to eventually move data storage onto a decentralized cloud infrastructure.

There is no indication that any blockchain projects are currently accepting Passport as a form of identification. However, to test the feature, Telegram states that users can visit ePayments.com, the first electronic payments system to support Telegram Passport, or this test page to trial the data request functionality.

In order to access Passport, users will need the latest version of Telegram.
