Bangladesh to start ePassport distribution in July

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the distribution of electronic passports or ePassports this month, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Thursday.

He disclosed the information while exchanging views with the newly-elected committee of Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the secretariat on Thursday, reported local media.

The ePassport has an embedded electronic microprocessor chip containing biometric information used to authenticate the identity of the bearer.

“We’ve already issued 26 million machine readable passports. We’re working with a renowned German company to produce ePassports. We’ve already finished relevant work to launch ePassports,” the Minister said, reported UNB.
