Following on from L-1’s announcement that is has been selected by the Indian authorities to deliver technology for the Unique Identification of India (UIDAI), Accenture and Morpho have also confirmed their involvement in the massive scheme.

Known as Aadhaar, this is the largest identity programme in the world and is designed to secure the identity of the residents of India, which is currently close to 1.2 billion.

Under the terms of Accenture’s initial contract, which will run up to two years or until 200 million enrolments (whichever comes first), the company will build a new system to help manage identity-related de-duplication and verification requests from both public and private organisations. It will also assist UIDAI in performance benchmarking and management of data quality for continuous improvement of the biometric solution, in addition to operating and maintaining the system.

The Accenture team includes global biometrics firm Daon, and MindTree, a Bangalore-based global IT company.

Morpho has confirmed that its consortium with IT services company Mahindra Satyam has also been selected as one of the key partners for the Aadhaar programme.

Like L-1 and Accenture, it is one of the key partners for the initial phase of this program. During this phase, the consortium will develop and maintain systems that will cross-check every new application by sifting through the biometrics database, preventing accidental or fraudulent duplication and ensuring that each identification number is unique. Morpho will provide the biometric technology while Mahindra Satyam will integrate and provide support across platforms and databases.

“The Aadhaar program will not only be designed to enable the government to deliver important social welfare programmes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MNREGA) to rural India, but also provide easier access for residents to services and resources such as health, education and welfare programs," says Krishna Giri, managing director of Accenture’s Management Consulting practice within its Health & Public Service practice in the Asia Pacific region.
