The long-awaited procurement phase of the UK’s national identity card scheme has been announced. A wide range of companies – perhaps in the region of 12 – are expected to enter the fray to build the biometric-based identity card system
The official group of suppliers will be formally appointed within the next nine months. They can then look forward to bidding for contracts totalling in the region of £2 billion (US$4.2 billion) over the next ten years – a significant part of the overall estimated cost for ID cards which is currently estimated at £5.7 billion.
