Jakarta’s city government has revealed it has distributed more than 1.3 million eID cards to citizens in the Indonesian capital as part of the central government’s plans to rollout a Single Identity Number system (known locally as NIK).
By the end of 2011, all Jakartans eligible for the cards – an estimated 6.4 million people – are expected to have joined the programme.
The Single Identity Number will be each citizen’s only identification number and will be valid for life, and will be used when applying for driving licenses, passports, land titles and voter cards.
The eID cards contain the cardholder’s information including marital status, blood type, parents’ names, employment details, disabilities, birth details, fingerprints and photo.
