A decision to scrap the use of contactless chips within European visas has been made public. The decision was made in light of durability and ‘collision’ problems occurring when biometric-based chips into visas are positioned in close proximity to the chips now being embedded into ePassports.
A modified proposal for a Council Regulation (EC 1030/2002) concerning residence permits was published by the Commission earlier this month . Within the text it was stated: “The decision has been taken that for the time being no additional solution will be adopted for integrating biometric identifiers on the visa sticker itself or on a separate smart card.”
The document confirms that biometric identifiers will be only stored in the Visa Information System.
