Former DHS Secretary Chertoff in video address to SDW 2009
Next week, in a series of one-off interviews for the
Security Document World 2009 conference,
keynote speaker Janice Kephart, Director of National Security Studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, USA, and former Counsel to the 9/11 Commission, will present exclusive video interviews with senior US security officials in the George W. Bush administration.
Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff; Former Assistant Secretary for Policy, US Department Homeland Security, Stewart A. Baker; and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, Screening Coordination Office, Kathy Kraninger, will all address the Security Document World 2009 audience during Kephart’s presentation.
Under the Bush Administration, the US Department of Homeland Security drove forward a multitude of secure ID and border programmes, including US-VISIT, E-Verify, REAL ID, the Western Hemisphere Security Initiative, and Visa Waiver Security Enhancements, such as E-Travel Authorization.
In her wide-ranging speech to Security Document World 2009, Kephart will discuss the status of these programmes and, critically, where these programmes stand in the new administration – drawing first-hand, and in detail, from the experience of the key individuals responsible for implementing them.
Commenting on how the US can continue to provide leadership in the areas of secure documents and identification, Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will tell the audience at Security Document World 2009: “We need a consistent set of standards and enough interest of the market to warrant investment in the technology. We further need to explain to the public that the best security for their own privacy is secure identification that can’t be counterfeited or corrupted.”
Former Assistant Secretary for Policy, Department of Homeland Security, Stewart A. Baker will add: “The Dept of Homeland Security stands at the center of influencing how identity documents are put together. We check more documents per day than any other agency in the world. We look at more than one million coming through our borders every day. We look at more than one million boarding planes within our borders every day. We therefore understand what our frontline personnel need from those documents.”
Janice Kephart’s speech to Security Document World 2009 will be at 16:50 on Thursday 26th March 2009, Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Broad Sanctuary, Westminster, London, SW1P 3EE, UK.
