Sagem Orga ready for next generation

Sagem Orga, in collaboration with German health insurer Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), has become the first organisation to develop the next generation eHealth card for Germany.

According to Sagem Orga, the Generation 1 card will enable TK to test and confirm the online capability of the cards and connected systems at an early stage.

The card’s specifications were established by Gesellschaft für Telematikanwendungen der Gesundheitskarte (gematik), the umbrella organisation of the German health system, which was set up in 2005 to introduce a new eHealth card using information and communications technology (ICT). It builds on the results of laboratory and field testing of the existing Generation 0 eHealth card.

“Before the latest generation cards can be issued, it is necessary to prove that health insurers’ systems can securely and reliably update insured people’s data – such as recording a change of address – on the electronic health card online,” says Sagem Orga. “This proof of the ICT system’s online capability is essential for full-scale rollout of the electronic health card.”
