Singapore has started rolling out its new ePassport system to citizens. According to local sources, 5,500 Singaporeans applied for the new BioPass ePassport on its launch day, 15 August.
The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) says that this is a big increase on the 2,000 passport applications it normally receives each day.
The new passport costs citizens S$80 and features the passport holder’s facial and fingerprint information as biometric identifiers.
The project is headed by NEC Solutions Asia Pacific.
